DB: Seger i 5 set mot Orion

21 DEC 2016 01:19
Traveling to Orion VK gym is no simple task and they know this well. Which is why RIG B was over joyed when they were met with big welcoming smiles, fruit and Kex choklad. Lucky for us, since the match turned out to be quite long.

Orion vs RIG 2-3 (20-25, 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 14-16)

This Div 1 match was met with great happiness and some relief it was to be the last for the girls to play of the year. Since there were no Elite matches during the weekend, a few Elite players made an appearance, RIG B was a full 12. Through out the match there were many ups and downs. Its possible the reason for the five set match was because of missed chemistry on the court or the anxiousness of the Christmas break fastly approaching or the fact Orion never gave up. It was most likely all of the above.

The first set went as planned with stability in the serve receive and attack. The serve pressure was very intense on both sides of the court. Both teams pushing each other all the time with their serve. Looking at the first set, you would have thought RIG B would have swept Orion in 3 sets. Coach Whitney Turner wanted all players to play and knew they all could get the job done if they stayed consistent. She decided to put in all other players besides the libero and a middle. Unfortunately, there were too many ups and downs and missed opportunities which led to the failure of the second set.

The third set came and went with a similar line up in the first. However, easy balls were going down and some were unable to do their job and get things moving on court. It did not help that Orion was serving extremely tough and our receive was faltering in a consistent manner. We finally came around with a mix of the first and second set teams in the fifth and final set. The chemistry was flowing and things were clicking. Maria Gottlander had an exceptional match after the second set with many attack points and good serve receive. Another player who made her mark, was Sofia Steinström with many clean attacks in the angle and showed her worth as not just an opposite but as a receiving ouside hitter as well.

Once the final point went down in the fifth, the feeling was of relief more than a job well done. RIG B could have done better with their receive and staying true to the defence tactic. However, that being said, a win is a win no matter how it is achieved. They still have a lot of developing to do and plenty of time to do it in.

With the Christmas break well in site, students of RIG Falköping will be able to be with their family and friends for a little while before having to start up training once again.

God Jul och Gott Nytt År!
